Olaf Avenati / Pierre-Antoine Chardel
This collection of texts by graphic designers, philosophers, sociologists, academics, geographers, anthropologists, typographers, and artists tackles big data, the vast datasets that have permeated our societies and ways of thinking. Digital technologies have triggered radical transformations in our social interactions, professional practices, and daily lives. Our connected technological devices allow us to participate in a new collective construction by producing its raw material—data—every day. A new reality is thus emerging.
How can we, as graphic and digital designers, approach this context?
- What kind of sign production can make this reality tangible and visible?
- How does data become information?
- What forms can be proposed for the digital tools that convey it?
- Can design contribute to re-humanizing our digital practices?
These are the questions explored by a team of researchers led by Olaf Avenati and Pierre-Antoine Chardel. This research is enriched by the work of engineering students from Télécom SudParis / Institut Mines-Télécom, as well as graphic and digital design students from ESAD Reims.
