With the development of modern communication and transportation methods, the fragmentation of the family, and the boom in large retail outlets, the lifestyles of urban dwellers have been radically transformed. The return to nature, the size of housing, and the difficulty of accessing homeownership in city centers are some of the factors that have given rise to suburban living in our Western societies in their quest for an ideal and idyllic lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This book, blending reflections on the peri-urban and photographs by contemporary artists, is a synthesis of the presentations and discussions that took place during the second Forum Vies Mobiles conference, entitled “Sustainable Mobility in the Peri-urban: Is it Possible?”. It should be considered an exercise in interpreting the challenges related to these forms of contemporary urbanization developing throughout the world, and especially in Europe. It also reflects the exchanges and contrasting perspectives of researchers, artists, and urban and transportation professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
