In 2016, while the world’s eyes were on the Olympic Games, homicides rose by 20% and robberies by 40%. 46,750 is a portrait of Rio de Janeiro over the last ten years: the flip side of the \u201cmarvelous city,\u201d full of contrasts and complexities. Jo\u00e3o Pina delves into the gang wars in the favelas, bringing us uncompromising images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

46,750, as we discover at the end of the book, is the number of homicides that took place in the urban area of Rio de Janeiro, an average of 13 homicides per day, from 2007 to 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
