What paths do art school students take after graduation? Going beyond administrative follow-up and statistics that provide figures, percentages, facts, and disembodied data, Brigitte Bauer decided to conduct a different kind of survey. Bridging the gap between her personal artistic practice and her teaching activities, between 2016 and 2019 she created photographic portraits of around a hundred of her former students. By visiting them where they live, the idea was to create an intimate portrait—and a portrait of a generation—of these young former students. These portraits are accompanied by a unique piece of writing: using elements of texts and notes provided by each individual, the photographer undertook the task of writing a polyphonic text in the first person. Deconstructed and reorganized into a single continuous text, the elements provided by each individual have become anonymous and not only bear witness to their professional careers but also evoke personal and even intimate details.
