Essay
Éric Dexheimer / Sylvestre Huet
Closing Fessenheim? The shutdown of the Fessenheim nuclear power plant is a political decision, made by the government and not a request from the Nuclear Safety Authority or EDF’s management. What does it entail?
Between a beautiful photography book and a book of text, this work invites the reader, through the photographer’s lens, to enter what the uninitiated might consider a sanctuary: a place that remains mysterious and of which we have very few images, and to share the daily lives of the men who work there.
Sylvestre Huet’s text provides a counterpoint to the images. Through and beyond the example of Fessenheim, and the announcement of its closure, scheduled for the end of 2016, he concisely and precisely addresses nuclear controversies, illuminating them with a broader reflection on the democratic control of powerful but risky technologies and on the sharing of knowledge.
