Drôles de salles
Fabienne Waks / Sylvie Setier
Atmosphere, atmosphere, for a deep dive into five Parisian cinemas. The Escurial, the Majestic-Passy, the Arlequin, the Majestic-Bastille, and the Reflet Médicis—each tells a story: that of its neighborhood, that of the early days of cinema, that of the craze for popular films, that of art-house cinema, that of the resilience of cinemas thanks to quality programming. The words of those behind the scenes intertwine with the memories of those in the spotlight… A photo essay by Jean-Christophe Husson punctuates the book in a hushed atmosphere. From the opening of the Royal cinema in an old hangar in 1911 (future Escurial), to the golden age of the 1930s, via the birth of the cinemas on rue Champollion in the 1950s-1960s, the book goes behind the screen to trace the first life of these cinemas, from the perspective of operators and spectators, and recounts, in the present, the challenge of operation, to continue to make the public dream in the dark rooms.
