João Pina est un photographe né au Portugal en 1980. Ses photographies ont été publiées entre autre dans D Magazine, Days Japan, El Pais, Expresso, GEO, New York Times, New Yorker, Newsweek, Stern, Time…
Son travail a été notamment exposé à l’International Center of Photography (New York),
à la Howard Greenberg Gallery (New York), à la Canon Gallery (Tokyo), au Museu de Arte Moderno (Rio de Janeiro)… Et en France à Visa pour l’image (Perpignan), et aux Rencontres d’Arles.
En 2007, il a publié son premier livre, Por Teu Livre Pensamento, présentant les récits de vingt-cinq anciens prisonniers politiques portugais.
En 2014, il termine son projet personnel le plus important, un documentaire sur les vestiges de l’Opération Condor, une opération militaire secrète de grande envergure en Amérique du Sud dans les années 1970. De ce projet découle son second livre, Condor.
Il est membre de l’International Center of Photography à New York où il enseigne régulièrement.

In 2016, while the world's eyes were on the Olympic Games, homicides rose by 20% and robberies by 40%. 46,750 is a portrait of Rio de Janeiro over the last ten years: the flip side of the “marvelous city,” full of contrasts and complexities. João Pina delves into the gang wars in the favelas, bringing us uncompromising images.
46,750, as we discover at the end of the book, is the number of homicides that took place in the urban area of Rio de Janeiro, an average of 13 homicides per day, from 2007 to 2016.
Viviane Salles's politically engaged poems punctuate the book, inserted between the photos on colored paper notebooks.
