It also sheds light on how Vodou, originating in a region encompassing primarily Benin and Togo, became codified as we know it today, and its history, which, through the slave trade beginning in the 18th century, led to cultural mixing in Brazil, Haiti, and Cuba. In addition to objects from the collection, the book includes descriptions of locations, pharmacopoeias, portraits (in text and images) of priests and diviners (in context), sellers of amulets, mythological narratives, and contextual photographs of ceremonies (some of which are highly secret and rarely reproduced).
