Bab-El

Valentine Vermeil / Assaf Harel

Traveling through Israel and the occupied territories, Valentine Vermeil witnessed contrasting dialectics and cultures: a Muslim culture where every event is reinforced by God's grace, and a Jewish culture that associates the tragic history of its people with a need for defense and absolute supremacy.

Bab-El presents a country in its entirety and complexity. These photographs deliberately distance themselves from media coverage and the imagery associated with this particular region. Their aim is to highlight what brings people together, such as the bonds of belonging to a group, whether social, ethnic, or religious.
