Depuis la fin des années 1990, Bertrand Meunier élabore des séries photographiques auscultant, d’une manière frontale mais sensible, les territoires au sein desquels il s’immerge au long cours. Remarqué pour ses photographies sur les mutations sociales du monde contemporain chinois, il s’est ensuite intéressé aux mégalopoles asiatiques. Il a en parallèle réalisé un long travail sur le Pakistan et l’Afghanistan en collaboration avec le magazine Newsweek. Plus près de nous, il chronique le quotidien des prisons françaises (Conversations, film documentaire, 2024) et la vie de sa propre famille (séries “L’homme éloigné” et “Le Refuge”). Membre du collectif Tendance Floue depuis 2007, son approche documentaire se double d’accents narratifs, servis par la poésie de son usage exclusif du noir et blanc. Assumant sa part de subjectivité, son oeuvre se construit dans un permanent va-et-vient productif entre l’ici et l’ailleurs. En 2023 il publie Erased (éditions Atelier EXB), aboutissement de son travail au long cours sur la Chine. La série Erased a reçu plusieurs récompenses dont le Prix Nicéphore Niépce en 2007 et le Prix Leica Oskar-Barnack en 2001. En 2022, Bertrand Meunier est lauréat et de la Grande commande Photojournalisme du ministère de la Culture 2022 (Radioscopie de la France).

Bertrand Meunier
Funambules is a collaborative book created under the direction of photographer Bertrand Meunier, following his encounter in Luxembourg with Réseau Psy, an institution that has welcomed and worked with people living with psychosis for several decades. There, Bertrand Meunier met several residents and embarked with them on a long-term project, sharing their daily lives and developing close relationships, particularly through workshops where a strong artistic connection gradually emerged.
Large Moleskine notebooks were then opened, providing a space for everyone to express their creativity through writing, painting, drawing, comics, collage, and photography. The notebooks grew through each participant’s contributions, giving rise to a truly collective work.
Funambules became a polyphonic book, bringing together Bertrand Meunier’s photographs and the work of around ten residents, masterfully brought together on the page by graphic designer Michel Lepetitidier.
