Catherine Rombouts / Sophie Richelle
Sophie Richelle is an historien.
They narrate, in a book in 2 voices, in pictures and texts, the end of the life of Christiane. In Belgium, euthanasia is allowed since the law of 2002. This book offer a view of realities. For Christiane and others, the choices allowed a detah more dignified, according to their definition of life. The photographies of Catherine Rombouts which followed her mother until her last breath, they mingle with family photographs and everyday objects, traces of a life well-lived.
Sophie Richelle’s texts, based on testimonies and more informative and statistical data, put individual and collective stories of euthanasia into perspective.
Caught between moral, religious, and political questions, euthanasia divides Europeans and sparks passionate debates in countries considering legalization. Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg have taken the plunge and authorized the practice within a strictly defined framework.
In France, euthanasia, like assisted suicide, remains prohibited by law, even though, since 2016, the Claeys-Leonetti law has granted the right to “deep and continuous sedation until death.” In this complex debate, reignited by high-profile cases (Vincent Humbert, Chantal Sébire, Vincent Lambert, Anne Bert), public opinion seems to have shifted, and opinion polls show a clear majority in favor of euthanasia. This poignant and sensitive work aims to advance the debate within our society.
