“Photography in Schools” is a project initiated in 2001 by the Robert Doisneau House of Photography in elementary schools (grades 3-5) in Gentilly. In 2008, it expanded to all schools in the Val de Bièvre Agglomeration Community. Led by two professional photographers, Yve Flatard and Jean-Jacques Grezet, this training program is integrated into the school curriculum. It introduces children to photography and image analysis, culminating in an annual exhibition showcasing their work. In collaboration with teachers, the program continues with educational activities in various subjects, including reading, writing, visual arts, history, geography, and oral expression.
The book recounts ten years of a unique educational experience: introducing children to photography and teaching them how to analyze a photographic image. Each year, the project’s initiators propose a theme (The Passage of Time, Light and Space, Materials and Colors, Writing, etc.). Placed in real-life photojournalism situations, the budding photographers engage with the city, its people, and their surroundings to find their subject and consider the best viewpoint before deciding to take a photograph. This fosters a genuine appreciation of the eye, one that goes beyond simply pressing the shutter and discovering the result almost by chance: the images themselves bear witness to this.
