Frédéric Régent est maître de conférences à l’Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, membre de l’Institut d’Histoire Moderne et Contemporaine et de l’Institut d’Histoire de la Révolution Française. Ses recherches actuelles concernent les propriétaires d’esclaves en Guadeloupe, des débuts de la colonisation française en 1635 à l’abolition de l’esclavage en 1848. Il est l’auteur entre autre avec Gilda Gonfier et Bruno Maillard de Libres et sans fers. Paroles d’esclaves français. Guadeloupe, Île Bourbon (Réunion), Martinique (Fayard, 2015). Frédéric Régent a été nommé président du Comité national pour la mémoire et l’histoire de l’esclavage.

This book brings together a selection of notices seeking runaway slaves (notices of marronage) published in the Gazette de la Guadeloupe between 1788 and 1847. These announcements of attempted escapes and perilous getaways, published alongside other announcements (prices of coffee, sugar, and cotton), reinforce the everyday violence experienced by slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries through their banality. Bernard Gomez's black-and-white photographs accompany this collection of archives, depicting the landscapes of Guadeloupe, which are like imprints, traces of harrowing stories... The wanted notices are reproduced in facsimile on black backgrounds.
A presentation text by Sylvaine Dampierre opens the book, and a glossary written with Frédéric Régent in the center of the book provides a more historical and educational perspective on certain terms used in the notices.
